Jason DeHaan's Bio

Jason
Jason DeHaan started bowhunting on his own at the age 12, well before I was legally able to gun hunt. My dad was a gun hunter and didn’t bowhunt, so most of my knowledge came from experiences my brother and I learned through trial and error. Jay grew up in the Whitetail rich state of Michigan where there were large quantities of deer, but the quality and age class were poor. Like most bowhunters in Michigan, early in his bowhunting career Jay had filled bushel baskets
with 1-1/2 year old bucks. It was around the age of 30 when Jay started getting the desire for something more. It was at that time Jay decided to try to hold out for bucks of older age classes. This was also when Jay realized in-order to kill mature bucks, you had to hunt where they lived. This is when Jay started hunting out-of-state, to Illinois he went!

Jay’s first out of state hunt was an outfitted hunt in Southern Illinois and by the time that trip had ended, even though he came home empty handed, he learned that he never wanted to spend a whole season hunting in my home state. He was hooked from that single trip, when he saw more mature deer in a week of hunting, than he had in many years in Michigan. Jay admits, his passion for hunting big bucks can sometimes cause some friction at home because he was now driving hundreds of miles to hunt deer, when he used to hunt right down the road. I think this is something any serious hunter can appreciate. It was in the state of Illinois that Jay and his hunting partner and brother Aaron, both connected on their best bucks. Since then they’ve made many trips to Illinois and Iowa for shed hunts, scouting trips, and were always looking for new properties to hunt in the Midwest.

Years ago Jay was an avid fly fisherman and spent a lot of time on the rivers of West Michigan. But before long, his passion for bowhunting continued to grow, and before long, he was no-longer fishing. He dove deep into the bowhunting lifestyle, and has now found a group of guys that can both appreciate this “addiction” and who help Jay embrace it!

Todd’s Comments
I met Jay and his brother Aaron through a hunting website, when we basically realized we only lived about 30 miles away from one-another. I invited Jay and Aaron to my house for our Wednesday night shooting league, and within no-time, Jay and Aaron had become very close friends and hunting buddies that understood the dedication and sacrifice aspect of bowhunting trophy whitetails. One thing that sticks in my mind about Jay is that he is not shy! He gives me more crap than any of my team members, which is something that keeps me in-line, no-matter what we’re doing together! I will suggest you keep some “handi-wipes” around if you’re shed hunting with Jay!
