and killed his first deer that fall. Since that time his love for bow hunting turned into a full blown obsession. Jesse's love for whitetails is now year-around. Bow season in Missouri starts September 15th and runs until January 15th. He is in the woods on average 80 to 90 days throughout those 5 months. In the off season he is constantly checking trail cams, picking up sheds, and scouting for velvet bucks. Over the past 17 years Jesse has made an impressive collection of whitetail harvests. Although he hasn't taken a "booner" yet; he has taken several impressive deer from the 130 to 150 class. Most of the ground Jesse hunts is rolling crop fields, hedgerows, and small timbers. Hunting these small tracts of land has proven effective, yet difficult compared to the large tracks of timbers most people deer hunt on.
Jesse believes that there is a fine art to hunting a mature whitetail on 80 acres of land with less than an acre of cover on it! His most memorable hunt to date was from this past season where he had an encounter with a giant buck twice in one month. After missing him once from the stand only to miss him again 2 weeks later from the ground in a blizzard, only this time the giant buck's sheds fell off right in front of Jesse's eyes after he sailed an arrow right over his back. This turned out to be a 180 inch giant 13 pointer, which unfortunately has yet to turn up on any trail cams this year. Jesse has only been filming and hunting with his partner Seth Spire for 2 seasons now, but they seem to know what each other is thinking without a word being said. Jesse has been a full time emergency medical technician for 9 years and a farmer all his life. This coming winter he will be studying criminal justice and attending the Missouri state sheriff’s academy. He was recently blessed with a new son Hunter William and absolutely cannot wait until he can pass along his whitetail wisdom to his son like his father did for him.
Todd’s Comments
Of all the teams we had out shed hunting this past spring, I think Jesse and Seth had some of the best finds with some unbelievable pictures to go along with them! I am excited to get to know Seth better and already know that I can expect some unbelievable stories coming from the Missouri boy’s camp! Jesse strikes me as a straight forward no BS kind of guy - I like that about him! |
